October
Tips
•Overcrowded
perennials can be dug and divided. Divide by
pulling apart or by cutting with a sharp
spade. Replant as soon as possible and water thoroughly. Local garden centers
carry a large selection of perennials this time of year, so it’s a great time to
add ones you are missing from your garden.
•The fall and winter
months are great times for herb gardening in our area. Most
herbs thrive in our mild climate, so plant and enjoy.
•October is a good
time to plant potted roses, especially old garden roses, or antiques. The roots
will have all winter to get established, and you will have much bigger and
healthier plants come spring. Continue to spray established
and new plants to prevent disease and insect damage.
•House plants that
have been left out of doors all summer need to be washed
with mild soapy water
to kill insects that may be hiding in them. Divide and
replant if they have
overgrown their pots. Bring plants indoors to prevent
damage from sudden cold snaps.
•Leaves are beginning
to fall, which makes this a good time for composting. Shredded leaves will
compost faster , so the use of a leaf shredder or mulching mower is
recommended. Waste from the vegetable garden can also be added to your
compost bin. Alternate a 6 inch layer of leaves with several inches of
soil. Wet thoroughly between layers. Turn often.
•Set out annuals such
as pansies, violas, and snapdragons.
Plant now for months
of winter color.
